This
is a story of survival. When Edward Timm started up his milling business in
Goole - in 1854 according to tradition, in 1863 according to the book! - there
were thousands of mills operating in Britain. Many were taken over; most were
shut down; only a handful survived. Now there are three major players and no
more than a couple of dozen small independents. The Old Five-Sailer reveals
how five generations of the Timm family built, expanded and safeguarded the
fortunes of a small firm in a small town, and how they fended off the voracious
giants of the industry.
